NATIONAL GRAND THEATER OF CHINA

Awarded in August  1999 to Paul Andreu, 
the winner , in the final phase, over Cartos ott,
 author of the Paris Bastille Opera and the English 


architect Terry Farred of an international design competition.
The PEKING OPREA a 140000 m2 structure will be erected just beside the Great Hall of the People. Near Tienanmen Square 212m-long ellipsoidal titanium shell will house the opera a concert hall, and two theaters, ranging in capacity from 520 to 2500 seats. In order to leave the external shell
The architect has chosen to provide public access through a 60 m-long   tunnel that will pass beneath a basin surrounding the building. Extensive urban renal ettorts are making way for a large park around the opera, scheduled for rapid construction with planned opening in 2002 or somewhat later because of administration delays.
